Founded in the 1980s, Princess Alice Hospice is a local charity dedicated to providing free high quality compassionate care and support for patients, their families and carers affected by cancer and other illnesses, living in Surrey, south west London and Middlesex.
Medical teams previously relied on laptops and PCs connected to a network through wired connections in order to access and update patients’ digital records throughout the day. However, the staff increasingly found this solution to be time consuming and inflexible, as not only did they have to spend some of their valuable time towards inputting the data at a network connection point, but these points were limited, meaning they had to take it in turns. In addition, the hospice was only able to provide limited Internet access to visitors.
Phil Martin, IT manager at the Princess Alice Hospice, decided it was time to consider a new wireless system in order to give the medical team more mobility and free them from being reliant on network cables. He explained, ‘We were looking for a new wireless infrastructure that would enable the medical team to input patients’ medical records quickly and easily from any mobile device, and more crucially to update them on the fly. The end result would be that the digital records are fully up to date at any given moment in time, allowing staff to administer the highest level of care and focus their efforts on caring for the patients rather than inputting digital data. In addition we wanted to be able to offer guest Wi-Fi to patients, carers, family and friends.’
iWireless Solutions was invited to scope out the premises and suggest a suitable wireless solution and IT infrastructure design, which it carried out free of charge. Following this, as part of iWireless Solutions’ community based charitable initiative; the business offered to implement the solution for free.
The solution comprises of a wireless LAN controller, wireless access points in the patient ward, day hospice and seminar rooms, and the utilisation of the buildings existing IT cabling in order to minimise disruption to patients and staff. The end result is an internal secure Wireless LAN infrastructure for public and corporate use.

It enables flexible working from any room in the Princess Alice Hospice and gives staff the freedom to input patient information on the move. We are delighted to have been chosen to work on this project and to be able to lend our services free of charge to such a worthwhile cause.’

We are therefore delighted that we can now provide this. Being able to maintain easy contact with relatives, friends and work colleagues means that there is one less thing for our patients’ families to worry about at what is inevitably a very difficult period in their lives.’
