Cisco has launched its annual Visual Networking Index forecast (VNI)

Such rapid growth is highlighted in the forecasted incremental amount of traffic being added to the mobile Internet, which between 2019 and 2020, is expected to hit 8.9 Exabytes per month – more than two times the estimated size of the entire mobile Internet in 2015 (3.7 Exabytes). The adoption of mobile devices, increased mobile coverage, and demand for mobile content are driving user growth two times faster than the global population over the next five years.

Smart mobile devices and connections  are projected to represent 72 per cent of total global mobile devices and connections by 2020—up from 36 percent in 2015. Smart devices are forecasted to generate 98 per cent of mobile data traffic by 2020.
In 2015, 65 per cent of the world’s population were mobile users, that’s 4.8 billion users. By 2020, still only 70 per cent of the world’s population will be mobile users, that’s 5.5 billion users. The VNI also claims that by 2020 75 per cent of global mobile data traffic is due to mobile video, an increase of 20 pr cent from 2015. The forecast also highlights the future growth in data use from wearable devices which will total 600.6million by 2020.

Despite this significant growth in mobile data traffic, the VNI forecasts that more mobile data traffic will be offloaded onto WiFi from mobile-connected devices, 38.1 Exabytes per month, than will remain on mobile networks by 2020, 30.6 Exabytes per month.

From a UK perspective the number of smart devices will reach 139 million by 2020, up from 64 million in 2015. Mobile data traffic will reach 600.4 Petabytes per month by 2020 – the equivalent of 150 million DVDs each month – up from 86.2 Petabytes per month in 2015. Again the increase in mobile data traffic will stem from video streaming and wearable devices both of which will see enormous growth by 2020.
