Valerie Maguire to facilitate at IEEE educational workshop on standards development

Valerie Maguire, BSEE, director of standards and technology at infrastructure expert Siemon, is to play a key role in the forthcoming IEEE Workshop on Engineering Standards, to be held on 18th September 2012 in London.

Ms Maguire, a renowned expert in balanced twisted pair and optical fibre telecommunications cabling and transmission theory, holds roles on many IEEE standards committees, is a published technical author and acclaimed industry speaker.

The workshop, designed to demystify the standards process, is sponsored by the IEEE Standards Education Committee and will be hosted at City University London. Registration is free and the workshop is open to both students and professionals within the fields of IT and engineering. Its aim is to promote standards education amongst the engineering community and it promises to deliver learning about fundamentals of the technical standards, focusing on the standards development process and working through the standards development lifecycle.

Excitingly, the session will include a practical, hands-on activity to simulate how standards are made. It is this latter, experiential exercise that Valerie Maguire will help to facilitate; assisting in the coordination of a contentious case study debate that will prompt attendees to reach group consensus, following IEEE procedures.

Explaining her role in the event, Valerie Maguire, said, ‘This Workshop will provide an overview of the IEEE standards development process, with a focus on the aspects of procedure and reaching consensus. I very much look forward to coordinating the case study exercise, which I believe will provide real insight for the attendees: It will afford them a unique opportunity to experience a taste of the challenge and responsibility of creating the standards that provide direction, guidance and progress for the industry. Standards development is something that I have dedicated a significant part of my career to and it will be invigorating to encourage some of the future thought leaders to join our important arena.’

Valerie Maguire is vice chair of the TIA TR-42 Telecommunications Cabling Systems Engineering Committee, vice chair of the TIA TR-42.7 Copper Cabling Subcommittee, TIA TR-42 appointed liaison to IEEE 802.3, treasurer of the IEEE 802.3 Ethernet Working Group, secretary of the IEEE 802.3 Maintenance Task Force, and clause 1 editor of pending IEEE Std 802.3-2012. In addition, Valerie has authored over 45 technical articles and engineering papers, holds one US Patent and received the 2008 Harry J Pfister Award for Excellence in Telecommunications.

The IEEE is the world’s largest professional association for the advancement of technology. The IEEE states that it is committed to promoting the importance of standards in meeting technical, economic, environmental and societal challenges. Its education programme includes shorts course about the standards needed in the design and development phases of professional practice.
